If you are looking for an easy but suggestive hike in Lombardy, we recommend the route that leads to Rifugio Martina. This itinerary is perfect for those who want to spend a day immersed in nature without facing a too demanding journey. Along the way, you can take advantage of a stop at Rifugio Martina, where you can enjoy a traditional lunch in a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. If you do not intend to continue to the top of the mountain, you can still enjoy a peaceful afternoon, surrounded by the natural beauty of the area and admiring a breathtaking view of Lake Como.
The Martina Refuge is located on the slopes of the Mount San Primo, one of the most fascinating mountains in the region. At 1682 meters high, Monte San Primo is the highest peak in the Larian Triangle and offers one of the most spectacular views of the entire area. Reaching the refuge is quite simple: just a short and pleasant walk of about 15 minutes starting from Piano Rancio. During the route, you will be completely immersed in the woods, surrounded by greenery and the sounds of nature. Once you arrive at the refuge, you will find yourself in front of an unparalleled view that extends across the entire Lake Como, making the excursion truly memorable.
For the more adventurous, from Rifugio Martina it is possible to continue the excursion by undertaking a more challenging trek that leads to the summit of Monte San Primo.
The shelter
The Martina Refuge is located in Alpe Picètt (Robins in dialect). The path that starts from Piano Rancio up to the refuge is very easy and even if it is uphill at times it is not very demanding. After a walk of about 15 minutes you arrive at a natural panoramic terrace where the refuge stands and from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Como. From here you can admire the Comancina Island, Villa del Balbianello and the village of Ossuccio.
It was born as a summer home for the Ticozzi family who used it as a base for activities such as wheat cultivation, livestock grazing and milk processing. In 1928 Eligio Ticozzi decided to transform the family cabin into a high-altitude refreshment point for passing hikers who wanted to reach the summit of Mount San Primo.
This characteristic restaurant has traditional cuisine with typical dishes of the Como tradition. Its specialty is polenta uncia, prepared with layers of polenta, local cheese, melted butter and garlic browned together. Also recommended are the polenta with braised beef and the polenta and venison.
After lunch it is possible to relax on the small terrace below the refuge and relax with the splendid view of Lake Como.
The refuge is open on Saturday and Sunday for lunch all year round and from mid-June to September during the week on request.
Excursion to Mount San Primo
Crossing the refuge you can continue, entering the woods, to reach the summit of Monte San Primo. The path appears to be steep and rugged with exposed stones and sections of unstable ground, certainly an excursion not suitable for everyone. The slope of the path is notable, the overall height difference goes from 1380m at the refuge to 1682m at the summit.
Once you reach the top, the panoramic view from the summit of San Primo embraces the Grigne, the Legnone, the Resegone and the mountains of the Lariano Triangle, you can clearly see the 3 branches of Lake Como and the tip of Bellagio.
We have not yet undertaken this path but it is absolutely in our hands. TO-DO list!
How to get
The refuge is located less than two hours from Milan. Just head by car towards the upper part of the Lariano Triangle, passing Erba and Canzo and then follow the signs for San Primo and Piano Rancio. Leaving the asphalt road, take a small dirt road, passing the Albergo Ristorante la Genzianella and continue up to a large car park from which the walking path starts.
